We are done! This was the most Idol Survival Show episode so far, and so many performances! I do think because the boys had not had to do so many performances in one night previously, their performances suffered a bit. The vocal team did not sound half as good during Sherlock as they did the previous episode, and I wonder how that affected the final scores.
I also felt again, like we were finally seeing some of the boys personalities. We really DID NOT GET A LOT of it during the shows' run - I wonder if they had Youtube updates like Boys Planet did? It just felt very...we do not know these boys at all.
The final boys! So I did know them lol...and obviously towards the end I started cheating. But JUANN AND CHANGSUN! These boys are married. Juann making the group and Changsun climbing up to give him the longest hug....you KNOW he was so happy to see he made it.
I loved seeing all the boys hug and congratulate each other, the raw reactions there are the best part of elimination shows I think!
Anyway they have a comeback this month so I am glad I know them!
Agreed that the Sherlock vocal performance seemed to suffer on this ep due to all the performances back to back. And BIG AGREE on the fact that this show did a terrible job introducing us to the contestants lmao. I might search to see if there was additional content being uploaded to social media while this show was airing because they sometimes seem to reference stuff that wasn't part of the show.
This was the most Idol Survival Show episode so far, and so many performances! Absolutely! This was where most idol shows would have had a package of more behind the scenes/background stuff, which again is so missing from this show and therefore losing us the opportunity to flesh out these guys a bit more. And like last episode... why not throw in some deadlifting? Wrestle a bear? Just keep it to theme :D
As it was, Changsun was the only one I had really strong feelings about, so delighted that he made it to number 1 (although I did think when they said it was him and Taehoon, like - they're both through! Ranking doesn't really matter after finals day! It's kind of a binary thing!)
Now I'm going to look up some actual TAN content at long last. I hope they now have some variety type stuff at least!
They definitely do! They have a lot of content, but I have heard they are not great about subtitling. Which is wild for a group that markets itself to all nations. I haven't watched a lot yet because I wanted to get through the show first.
I see one MC did her duty and showed up decked in animal print, I wish all three of them did!!!
Everyone is extra glammed up this episode and many have changed their hair, so I am once again struggling with putting names to some of these faces. I guess I will complain about this to the very end: I wish the show spent a little more time on showcasing the 16 remaining contestants personalities and relationships to humanize them more.
Anyway, tall guy Joonhyeop was so nervous during his "please vote for me!" introduction lmao. Also, I don't like what he did to his hair. On the other hand, I am digging Yoonho's light perm, his hair has so much body and looks nice and bouncy. He has really been benefiting visually from having his eyebrows back lol.
In terms of ranking, it is killing me that my guy SM stan Jaeeok was so close to the final 7 here but won't make it in the end. He was ranked 8th at the beginning of this ep? So close. Unfortunately for him, the vote magnet Hyunyeop was right below him, and it seems the audience votes will drive him up once more.
I like that most of the masters are back for the final evaluation (wish you were here too, Minho!) Seems we are getting a lot of performances this episode, so I will strap in.
After spending so much time on their manly charms, I laughed at their sailor suit uniform looks for the second all-14 performance. I think that song is my favorite from the show (Diving into you or whatever).
It feels weird seeing the position unit stages again when we just saw the last episode, but I ain't complaining. I felt warmer towards the rap one this time.
Tiger JK cleaned up really nice! The glasses + red suit combo does him well.
Now that voting is over, we get the bots wearing pink and singing a little sweet little song. A bunch of them cried, but it's too early for tears! Save it for the voting results! Kidding, go ahead and cry, I love it when boys cry. TT
I find the TAN To All Nations group name to be a major letdown. It should've kept some aspect of the Wild Idol identity I feel. Why lose out on that strong branding?
Hyunyeop jumped from 9th to 6th at the end, even the MCs saying it is surprising... Again, no hate towards this guy, but he truly pushed through this show basically on audience votes. Wish I could interview someone who was on the ground when this show aired to explain how the hell he became so popular at the beginning and maintained that popularity to the end. I imagine this was controversial during the airing.
From the group reaction to Jaejun and Sunghyuk making the cut, it's clear that they are really well-liked... dear Wild Idol editors, why didn't you show us more group dynamics stuff...
Jisung clawing his way up to third place in the end was really deserved. He never had a clear narrative in this show, but he spent a lot of it ranked at the bottom, but he remained a really engaging personality and had solid chops, so you couldn't help but notice him. Of those who made the final cut, he's probably my favorite.
In contrast, Taehoon is someone who made very little impression on me throughout this show. I know he spent the latter part of the show in the top ranks, but I can't recall him ever standing out to me at any point in either talents or personality. Like...was there ever a highlight moment with him? Am I forgetting something? He's just some guy to me lol. Anyway, he's second.
Changsun places first to zero surprise from me. He really earned it. And he's looking especially handsome tonight. Congrats to him! And oh my god, this sweet guy...
Sungkyu is such a liar about being clueless lmao, he has been on board the "Juan For Debut" train since day one, he absolutely thinks he is the one in 7th place because he definitely gave his 20 one-pick points to him, plus he's consistently been in the upper ranks.
AH!!!!! The MCs even confirm that Jaeeok was number one in total mission points!!! The fact that he performed so well on this show and didn't make the final cut in the end is so frustrating for me. Like, damn, how did it end up not being enough?
But anyway, final debut member is Juan. He's a great singer and also made a strong impression on this show, so no surprise there. This lineup needed a main vocalist badly lol. But imagine...we could've had TWO main vocalists and also another main dancer...just swap someone out for my guy Jaeeok lmao. Yes, I'm lowkey bitter over a show that aired two years ago hahahahaha.
Stray thought, but given the fact that this was filmed in 2021, I wonder whether it was always planned to be an outdoors concept or if they did it mostly outdoors in the earlier part of the year in order to meet COVID guidelines?
elfk;ljd;fj In conclusion, this was the first individual contestant survival show that I watched, and it sure was a ride. I don't know if anything else can really compare to this given the extreme concept. It's been fun!
Hyunyeop made NO impression on me at all. You kept having to tell me who he is and I kept being confused and mixing him up with other boys. Same with Sunghyuck. No impression. Who is this man.
Taehoon I generally liked! He's pretty quiet I think, and a dancer. He needs braces badly, but is otherwise very handsome, so that stood out to me. Jisung I always really liked! I didn't realize he was so young, but he was one of three boys I knew going in ended up in the final group. Him, Jaejun, and Jooan. Those were the only three who had space in my mind from the start, and that ended in the group. Jisung had orange hair early on too, and that helped me a lot to recognize him!
Look if a trade had to be made...Hyunyeop for Jaeeok. They are straight up interchangeable in my mind. Sorry to your boy! They were the tiniest boys on the show.
Literally wild to me how these rankings were all over the place like WTF went on in this show!
Agree re: the MC in the tiger print! And the loss of the 'Wild' concept through these last two eps. I mean imagine if instead of just songs in this live final they'd also had them do chin-ups... People would remember it!
Stray thought, but given the fact that this was filmed in 2021, I wonder whether it was always planned to be an outdoors concept or if they did it mostly outdoors in the earlier part of the year in order to meet COVID guidelines? In Korea I got the impression they actually discouraged people being outdoors, and were much more insistent on mask wearing outdoors, than in internal/private spaces. Like on BTS In The Soop they'd all hang out maskless with each other in the house, but if one of them went running down a deserted road the mask went on. Or you often saw people taking masks off as soon as they got into a car. It felt like the idea was 'keep your germs to yourself' rather than thinking more about modes of transmission. But then they had so little covid in Korea overall that the guidelines didn't have to make total sense.
Episode 13! \o/ I am still delighted by the monolith travelling with them, I still want the sci fi AU from the monolith's POV of the whole events.
Agree with the points above that we could have kept a more 'wild' theme in the final and then the band itself. I'll be interested to see their output now - Youtube hole here I come. I was glad to finally see some nature footage again in the start though.
It's been fun watching this! Thank you for the suggestion and hosting <3
