Changsun Best Boy! <3 I might watch some of the band's content purely on the Good Leader Vibes strength :D

Changsun really has shone on this show as a leader. Maybe it's just the editing, but watching this, it's very obvious who they want leading the eventual debut group lol. He definitely has the chops and gets the other contestants to listen to him well.

I am feeling cold just watching these poor lads on the mountain. At least the judges get umbrellas!

And making them prepare a stage with no mirror, no stage, no sound system so they're singing to themselves... I can only imagine this is one the trainers bring out for all other rookie groups now like 'YOU'RE SO LUCKY ACTUALLY'

It does make it harder to follow individuals and storylines though, the way everyone is just a drowned rat in the same clothes, and there aren't so many close ups because of the filming conditions. Also amused by figuring out who has been blurred out and what's just rain on the camera lens!

And after ALL that, and the stress of saying goodbye to one single individual again, now you must 'cockfight' (ahem) for crappy chicken snacks! I do wonder how the chicken snack people felt about their marketing investment.

Fascinating how the whole 'people can displace others' thing was - in essence - undermined by the first lot of higher ranking people not wanting to displace anyone and then thereafter the others being like 'well that's the weak team now'. I do not think the producers really wanted a 14-8 and 7-1 split. Much more harmonious though.

I liked when they said the infolith was moving. I have invested it with sentience in my head at this point. Or at least spirit possession. There is a cool Ghibli-esque magical realist AU to be written here...

Yeah, maybe it's just me, but I feel like there are undercurrents of very clear alliances among the contestants that aren't exactly being highlighted in this show, but definitely peek through in terms of who wants to team up with who and who takes points from who. It's a natural thing to occur in a competition, not necessarily nefarious, but I do wish the show would actually focus on the interpersonal relationships more so we could get a clearer picture of what's happening!

I don't think I have many thoughts for this episode, but we'll see what comes out lol.

First, my two guys Jaeeok and Yoonho.

Of course Jaeeok is a Taemin fanboy, of course. I feel really bad for him knowing that he doesn't make it because he is clearly a great vocalist and dancer and really show savvy and determined (the fact that he was the only member of his team to make an effort in the cockfight? C'mon!) It seems like he has just had a streak of bad luck on this show...or possibly on the management side, there was a reason they didn't want him in? IDK. I really hope he surfaces again in a new group eventually. As far as I can tell, he's still a trainee, and his company literally debuted a boy group this year (XODIAC), but he isn't in it...even though he falls right into the age range? Which makes me wonder if he has left the company for another one or decided to pursue another career entirely. According to kprofiles, he had spinal issues, so maybe he decided to protect his back.

Anyway, poor Yoonho is going through it. He's been pretty cheerful this whole show despite everything, so it sucks to seem him (rightfully) getting down-spirited after he keeps failing to make the cut somehow. It probably especially hurts his pride since he's one of the few in this batch that have debuted before. Anyway, I am rooting for him even knowing he doesn't make it lol... it does appear to be a mistake that they made the other guy center instead of him.

In other news, goodbye to Hyungseok. I'm glad he was at least able to leave with his head held high in the end, even though they cut him with little warning.

In other other news, what the heck is going on with Hyunyeop's online voting popularity??? He was the contestant that squeaked into the sixteen contestant cut because of online voting, and he is currently in 1st place according to the end of this episode. Why did he have so many fans????? I've found him cute, but not especially special, so it is mystifying me. I tried to look up for some explanation, but the only thing I've heard is just that his cute image appealed to people...I guess a lot of fans rallied behind him when he was pointed out as being Cute Baby Bear in the first two episodes and then people just kept voting and voting. Maybe some element of feeling bad for him because he looks kinda small and pathetic compared to most of the other contestants?

I went down a small rabbit hole looking Jaeeok up on naver and reading the translated Korean pages lmao. Prior to Wild Idol, he was on another survival show (Under Nineteen) and did OK there (eliminated episode 12). On that show, he had a MUCH cuter image, very sweet lovely boy which he has not been promoting himself on Wild Idol as at all lol. Leaning into his cheerleader image then. He was also part of a pre-debut group under his old label (MBK). [During this same period, his label had also sent some boys in for Produce, but not him--or he didn't make it through the Produce audition process.] After Under Nineteen, he moved to a new company (his current one? unless he left? One Cool Jacso) and apparently also had eyelid surgery in addition to transitioning to a more mature/cool image. But yeah, since Wild Idol, it seems even Korean fans haven't heard much from him, and the fact that he wasn't in XODIAC makes it seem like he either moved labels again or just left. But hopefully he is doing well, wherever he is. Seems a shame since he had all the makings for a great idol, but sometimes things just don't work out, I guess.
