Starting out incredibly casual: lions die because other lions kill them. Cool, cool.
Apparently fans suggested names...did they though...did they? Or did the company accept names and have one already in their pocket.
(ZeroBaseOne are you fucking KIDDING me?)
What is it with this show and being like, one of you must leave! At a time! Like k. Kinda weird.
Yunho vs Jisung was really good. They were both gripping and engaging, and worked well together as a team performance.
Gunwook picking Hyeongseok...mmm I see why he did it, strategically, but I feel like an older and more experienced contestant wouldn't have immediately chosen the lowest ranked person competing against. It made me root for his opponent.
At the same time, Hyeongseok KEPT talking himself down, like, I suck, I can't do this, I let Gunwook choose, which was just not fun to watch! And then he was not BAD but he stopped halfway through to be like Gunwook has it all! So that was strange.
This is the second time he's told us about his leukemia. I really like him, but not like. On this show or in this group. I don't know! He's so handsome, but he has NO confidence at ALL.
Solar and Kyuhyun!!!! He is hilarious, I loved him on Peak Time (and also I DO have to acknowledge that SuJu was my kpop intro many moons ago...) and I love Solar! She has an incredible voice, and such a pretty smile.
Hyunyeop sounded great in his battle with Gunwook, who did not kill it, and BOTH Aloha boys had incredible voices...I get we will see the rest of that battle later! And why he started crying...omg...
I feel like at the start someone was googling this animal stuff and then realised NO ONE WAS CHECKING and started just going 'uh.... animals compete to be idols or something I guess', job done :D
Gunwook picking Hyeongseok...mmm I see why he did it, strategically, but I feel like an older and more experienced contestant wouldn't have immediately chosen the lowest ranked person competing against. Yes, very Gunwook - you forget because he's so LORGE that he's young and inexperienced and not always that subtle or considered. And then yes the other trainees are very much in awe of him and I'm sure he's a charisma ray interpersonally, but they don't realise he doesn't always land on camera/through edits.
Kyuhyun!! Is it even a kpop survival show without him???
Yes what is the crying about? Also the two pairing up because they wanted to duet with each other, not to compete. That was a whole thing.
Dying laughing at animals compete to be idols, put some lipstick on that tiger! Make him do a little dance!
Gunwook is just. I know I have made it very clear I love him but I simply love him! He's not a very strategic thinker overall, I think and he is soooo young here. He's so charming though! (This is not me saying I don't think he's bright, I think he is, but I don't think even at nineteen this man is playing like, 4d chess on the rankings and how people perceive him. He's very sincere.)
Is it really the second time he's mentioned his leukemia? I did not remember that at all, and the hosts acted like it was their first time hearing it too.
Gunwook is def coming across as...not a very strategic thinker lol. Fair enough, he is a kid and inexperienced compared to a lot of the guys here.
I think Hyeongseok felt kinda cornered both because Gunwook is really talented and ALSO he is 7 years younger than him. Like, if you're going up one on one against a kid with that big of a gap, you kinda feel like an asshole if you go all out...and at the same time, can't help but be aware that even if you DO go all out, that kid is talented enough to likely beat you.
Hooray for them in another setting that looks slightly less barren! I am still amazed they're getting these judges out there all day in the mist etc
I would love to see a behind the scenes of whoever has to build the info-lith ranking board thing in the middle of nowhere and then who is operating the graphics etc. How many re-takes because the screen fritzed? I guess it's the kind they use for festivals/outdoor concerts etc.
This episode was a harder watch simply because I really don't care for not-great rap and some of this was... not great. I think you lose a lot in translation with rap too. But the match-ups were interesting. I think the idea of 'you can compete in more or fewer battles, do you want to risk your points or have the screen time' was a very interesting choice to put to them.
The vocal battle gave me feelings. Looking forward to more next week!
The judges just come up for what they're filming, and I'm sure they have like, trailers and such they can hide in when they aren't filming the boys. Cameras need to have like, equipment rooms. And I am sure they have done at least some hair and makeup for the boys too, just so they show up on camera looking normal
I am def interested in seeing how many people opt out of dance since everyone here did vocals...will some of the rap boys not do dance? Like, this is a pick 2 right
Agreed that I want to see them building that tower thing!!! And yeah, I like the format of these opt-in battles, it was a good ideal to shake the show up and give each contestant more individual focus.
These episodes are already long, but I find myself wishing we saw a little more of their downtime and casual interactions. Like, when they were picking who they'd share a tent with and the three oldest all got together and someone was like Honey~ to call someone over--Wild Idol, explain!!! It feels nuts that we are already so far in this show, but I have little idea of who is pals with who.
Anyway, the rap battle. Yoonho continues to appeal to me, he had such charm in this section. His battle with Jisung was really satisfying because they seemed like they genuinely had fun togerher and were well-matched for the competition.
I have identified Jueon as the guy who keeping getting into little squabbles with other contestants due to his sharp personality. To be fair, maybe he's getting an evil edit. But it still made me laugh when he told Lil Boi that he's been emulating him and then immediately Lil Boi is like "I hate people who mimic others" LMAO. And then Lil Boi wound up voting for the other guy in the end. A harsh world...
Knowing that Gunwook doesn't make it in the end, it's interesting to see him keep soaring along. I wonder what will be his downfall? Getting the sudden cancer backstory from his opponent Hyungseok was really surprising; we haven't really been getting ANY personal details about anyone until then. Maybe I'm too used to American shows like America's Got Talent where most contestants give some sort of tale about where they come from/why they are here, but I feel like Wild Idol could do with humanizing the contestants a wee bit more. Most of them have barely made an impression on me by this point. I know that early on, they wanted to keep it mysterious so everyone would be on even ground, but by this point, surely we could start getting to know them better?
(Also, rather annoyed that Kocowa hasn't been translating the self-written rap lyrics because it seems like we're missing good info about the contestants.)
Vocal battle time! (Most) everyone wants to battle! It seems like these one on one battles are really going to shake the rankings up. I find it interesting that both in the rap and vocal sections, Gunwook picked someone low ranked (if not the the lowest ranked.) Not sure what the thought process was there, if he was thinking solely about points or if he thought they were easier opponents or what. It was kinda controversial, but I preferred Jaeeok's approach of picking someone that he knew would be his fiercest competitor and right next to him in rank (Juan). It feels more honest and also more interesting as a viewer.
Anyway, cliffhanger! Why did Hyungseok start crying? Does he feel like he's definitely going home? I guess I'll find out when I watch the next ep lol
It feels nuts that we are already so far in this show, but I have little idea of who is pals with who. Yes, we've had very little of their vibes/chemistry, which is actually what helps people be memorable and 3D.
Knowing that Gunwook doesn't make it in the end, it's interesting to see him keep soaring along. I wonder what will be his downfall? I've been wondering this. He looks nailed on. No wonder Boys Planet was A Lot for him
