Year of the Girls!
So this was supposed to be a little blurb of "Here's what I am listening to!" but like things do when I start writing, it just got away from me and became a brief essay on how 2022 is the Year of the Girls. Which it absolutely is. But first, here is what I am listening to right now:
Nerdy, by Purple Kiss
Listen, I am a sucker for a horror aesthetic, and Purple Kiss are queens in that regard. I was thrilled when they returned to their spooky style this comeback - the story in this video is so fun! But I also LOVE the song - the melody is so catchy, and the instrumentation is so fun and unique.
After Like, by IVE
IVE! I had to warm up to them - the tempo changes in Eleven weren't something I naturally like, but once I got used to it, I was obsessed. Obviously Love Dive is great, but After Like is one of the best girl group songs I have ever heard. Sampling "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, one of the greatest songs of all time? Immaculate.
Cyberpunk, by Ateez
Why is this song not a single, seriously? I have had it on loop since it dropped and I'm not stopping any time soon.
Forever 1, by Girls Generation
It's love, it's love, is what I feel every single time I look at Taeyeon. I can't help it.
UNNATURAL by WJSN/Cosmic Girls
I know I am late to this party but WJSN stole my heart and my mind when I first saw them perform "Navillera" during Queendom 2, and I haven't been the same since. This song is just one of many of theirs I cannot stop playing.
Listen, I never thought I would be a girl group stan. Despite listening to kpop for literal years, I wasn't a member of any kpop fandom. I just had a few songs I liked, mostly by Shinee, EXO, and Big Bang that just...lived on my playlists. But then something broke in my brain. (Marvel broke my brain, but that's a different story...) and I became the most massive BTS fan. And because I am obsessive, and because I already had a foundation of Boys Who I Liked, I got super into boy groups.
But the girls just weren't doing it for me.
Well, 2022 is the year the girlies have taken over. My bias group is WJSN. My playlists: girls, only. It's like I've made a complete 180 shift. I am living and breathing girl groups! And what a phenomenal year for it!
We had Queendom 2 - amazing. I should write a whole piece on my favorite performances from Queendom 2. We had IVE, dropping hit after hit. Seriously, is anything they have done not incredible? I think not. These ladies live at the tops of the charts, and they have earned their place there. We had a Girls Generation comeback! Of course I bought the album. (Villain? Oh. My God. Best b-side.) We had Nayeon's solo album, and we're getting Jihyo's solo album, and Seulgi's first solo album dropped today. I haven't listened yet, but I know it's going to slay.
2022 has been the Year Of The Girls, and I for one could not be more thrilled about it.
